Open space zones are local parks which are used for a variety of outdoor recreational activities and community uses that provide enjoyment of our environment. The Outline Plan for the Whangaparaoa Zone established a broad pattern for activities and for access within the Zone. It took into account the capacity of the infrastructure serving the community, particularly the roading network and the sanitary sewerage system.

The safety, mental health and convenience  of people living in the area and people visiting, demands that these open space zones are preserved. Through improved air and water quality, buffering of noise pollution and mitigation of impacts from extreme events, urban green spaces reduce environmental health risks associated with urban living.
